Setting a cleaning schedule helps you to keep your home organized and cleaning easier. However finding the right time to do this can be found by testing.DeClutter Fast E-Book By Mimi Tanner

Home ButtonHave a fixed time on weekends

I have a fixed cleaning schedule, in every two weeks to be exact. On every second Sunday I try to do the cleaning as soon as possible. By that way I can complete the most tedious task early enough so that I don’t have to worry about it any later. Especially if you can complete the task with someone else, it gets done much quicker.

Home ButtonHave a flexible time during the week

Earlier I had a schedule where I cleaned my home during the week and my cleaning activities were split to three days. First day I cleaned my floors, the next day I cleaned my levels and on the third day I cleaned bathrooms and kitchen sinks. This is option is better if you want to dedicate your weekends for something else. You can do the cleaning in smaller chunks and that doesn’t make the task so overwhelming. However the reason why I decided to do the cleaning on weekends was primarily the time aspect. It just worked better on my overall schedule than during the week.  On weekdays when you go to work, come back tired and then try to get on with it, it may feel too overwhelming.

Some parts of your home need to be taken care of more often than others. Here is a brief list of the tasks I have done on daily weekly basis:

  • Taking out the trash: 3 times/week (or more depending of how much garbage you have). For organic waste you should try to take out the trash even more often than that (because of to smell)
  • All the recyclable newspapers or cardboard: once a week. I tend to do this on every Sundays
  • Cleaning some unexpected mess: Whenever it happens. For example you might spill milk to you kitchen table and you want to get it cleaned as soon as possible.
  • Cleaning tables. Every day. For example my kitchen table gets filled with newspapers and magazines, sometimes even with books. I try to get all the extra stuff out of the table by the end of the day and have a small basket where to put the magazines/newspapers I’m about to read afterwards.
  • Make my bed: Every day before the noon. It just increases the general comfortability and clean look of my bedroom.
  • Fridge: Make sure that no rotten/outdated food can be found. Take that to organic waste as soon as possible.

Items cleaned on weekly/bi-weekly basis:

  • Mats: At the same time when cleaning my home. I have only vacuum cleanable mats so I don’t necessarily have to take them out.
  • Chairs/Sofas and levels: I also vacuum clean these when I’m cleaning my home.
  • Bathrooms, toilets and sinks: Not the most nicest stuff to do but overall the most important ones in order to increase the comfort level of your home.

Some places need to be cleaned less often:

  • Windows: Twice a year. This is something I tend to do on spring (for e.g. on May) and sometime during the fall (for e.g. on September/October).
  • Melting your freezer at least once a year. Maybe you might have a freezer which can do this automatically, but otherwise this has to be done manually. If I don’t do this, there is actually too much frost on my freezer.
  • Dead/dried-up plants: take them out to an organic waste whenever you have a plant that’s not alive anymore

The the fixed cleaning schedule (doing the cleaning bi-weekly in one go) is the best for me and my fiancee – we can clean our home quickly and we have time for the rest of the weekend for other activities. Naturally the best routine can be found only by testing.

* In my country (Finland) recycling is mandatory. The practice may vary depending of the country where you live.
